Zukiswa Simelukane is the founder and director of Onesimo Soccer Academy in Crossroads Township, Cape Town and the club secretary of Cape Town All Stars, a second division South African soccer club. Zukiswa was born in Crossroads in 1985, and studied filmmaking at University. In 2006, she produced a short documentary called “Guns and Drugs in the Hands of the Youth.” The film explored the violent gangster lifestyle of Crossroad’s youth. Zukiswa had a plan to shoot a follow-up of the boys, but by 2011, half of them had passed away either through gang violence or mob justice. One of these boys was her little brother. Out of these tragedies, Onesimo Soccer Academy was founded in 2019 as a way to get the youth away from cycles of gangsterism in the streets and onto the soccer field. Since its inception, Onesimo has grown into Crossroad’s largest soccer academy with hundreds of weekly participants. Zukiswa continues to foster the organization’s growth, encouraging more and more youth to get off the streets and onto the field.
